Icons of Evolution

The Discovery Institute takes a hard-hitting look at the falsifications and pseudo-science that make up modern scientific practice. As thorough as they are, we must add the most important detail: identification of the Designer as our Lord Jesus Christ.

The way it really is: little-known facts about radiometric dating

As this article from Creation Magazine explains, long-age geologists will not accept a radiometric date unless it matches their pre-existing expectations. Tas Walker de-mystifies the perception that these dating methods are incontrovertible proof against the Bible’s timeline of creation.

Upside-Down: Science Stoppers

Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter’s clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?
-Isaiah 29:16

Atheists often claim that belief in supernatural creation is a science-stopper. Christians explain everything in nature by claiming “God did it,” or so the argument goes. As usual, those that reject God’s wisdom have turned the truth upside-down. Evolutionism, not creationism, has slowed scientific progress in some areas and stopped it altogether in others. In the area of biology, one scientist starts with the premise that every part of an organism is there for a purpose and seeks to discover each one’s function. Another scientist expects to find structures which have no useful function and turns away from further investigation.

In the 1925 Scopes trial, “The trial of the Century,” the defense argued that the presence of 180 vestigial organs in the human body is evidence of Darwinism. “Vestigial” organs are those believed to have no useful function because they are “leftovers” from an earlier stage of evolution. Among the organs presented during the trial were the: appendix, pituitary gland, and coccyx (tail bone). Since then, scientists have discovered useful functions for nearly all organs once considered vestiges of our past development. The appendix plays a role in early development and immunity. The pituitary glandcontrols several other glands and produces a growth hormone. The coccyx has many muscles attached to it, making it something like a structural “keystone.” These discoveries have forced evolutionary biologists to modify their definition of “vestigial” to allow for some level of functionality, but they have not abandoned the concept altogether.

The modern version of this argument is something called “junk DNA,” formally known aspseudogenes. These are sections of DNA that currently appear to have no purpose and therefore are presumed to be left over from past mutations. In contradiction to this perspective shaped by the naturalistic paradigm, some scientists are investigating these genetic regions and are beginning to discover functions for them. For instance, a University of Michigan study suggests that some pseudogenes assist in repairing broken strands of DNA.

If more scientists today were devising experiments to discover the uses of pseudogenes rather than drawing branches on an imaginary ancestral tree, how much more might we know today about the building blocks of life? If those in 1925 had not proclaimed the appendix and other organs as vestigial, how much sooner might we have learned of their importance and applied that knowledge to modern medicine?

When we begin with a different viewpoint that every living thing and every part within it is intricately designed by a mindful Creator, we have good reasons to perform scientific investigations to determine the logic behind constructs that we do not yet understand. In fact, one might even argue that this principle of design is the basis for modern science. The real science-stopper is evolutionism or any other belief system that denies that there is any purpose behind the beauty we observe, leaving us with less reason to experiment, to wonder, to study, or to know anything more.

Paul’s Life and Journeys [Interactive]

View Paul’s Life and Journeys in a larger map

While you explore the map above, below are some observations to take note of.

  • His friend Barnabus followed him everywhere until their dispute about John-Mark( Acts 14:26-28, 15:36-41). Barnabus (along with others) is later rebuked by Paul for withdrawing himself from Gentile converts ( Galatians 2:11-20).
  • He never seems to travel alone, meaning that his missionary journeys weren’t necessarily just Paul’s journeys as we normally refer to them.
  • Each of his three missionary journeys lasted no more than three years. We tend to remember him as the simply a missionary when in fact only 9 years of his roughly 65 year life span were spent on mission trips. The rest of his life was spent either as a Pharisee or as a Christian preaching in a small handful of cities.
  • He didn’t go on first trip untill he was around 40 years old.
  • The routes he took on mission trips brought him back to some of the same places multiple times. Paul was intentional about training the new converts by keeping in contact through letters and doing follow-up visits.
  • It’s easy to assume he spent a lot of time in the places that are the subject of his epistles. In fact, he only spent a relatively short period of time in Galatia, Ephesus, Phillipi, Collosae, and Thessalonica.
  • Paul visited both Tyre and Sidon on separate occasions. These once-great cities had a prominent place in Old Testament prophecy, which predicted they would fall. They were both destroyed, and little is mentioned of them in the New Testament other than as a warning to others.

If the Lord has shown you something interesting that’s not in this list, we’d love for you to tell us about it!

Only Jesus Can Save The Planet

Global Warming has a lot in common with Darwinism. Creatures, like global average temperatures, change over time. Zealous advocates match the skill of politicians when sidestepping any believable definition of how and why such changes take place. They call us to take action, to be a part of slowing down or reversing our impending doom from rising sea levels and growing deserts. We are told the problem is caused by humans; therefore, we have the power to change it if we work together to find a solution to this global problem.

Given our biblical command in Genesis 1:28 (also see Genesis 2:15) to take care of God’s creation, I’m all in favor of conservation efforts. But, many of today’s mainstream Christians have taken this command out of proportion and have bought into the hoax that we are a primary cause of our planet’s impending destruction. That would be true if we’re talking about God’s final judgment of sin (Revelation 20), but in the case of environmentalism sin has been redefined to include emitting anything classified as a greenhouse gas, including the air you exhale.

This really amounts to worshipping Gaia, better known today as “Mother Earth” or “Mother Nature.” It is this goddess we are said to be sinning against, not the God of Creation. To think we could have the power to fundamentally alter what he has made is to put ourselves in the place of God. True, original sin brought about the curse that forever altered the planet (Genesis 3:17-19), but this curse was God’s doing in response to that action. It had nothing to do with our implementation of fossil fuels as a primary source of energy.

With the widespread acceptance of the manmade global warming theory, there is a good chance that those reading this article are uninformed about which facts are fabricated and which claims are exaggerated. Since the most common claim is that carbon dioxide emissions are the number-one manmade contributor to climate change, I shall focus in that area for the limited scope of this article.

You may have seen or heard of charts that show a correlation between the rise of CO2 and the rise of global temperatures. What is usually not pointed out clearly on these charts is that CO2 rises afterthe temperature change. In order for it to have caused temperature increases, the rise in CO2 would have to come before the warming. For a little bit of perspective, you should know that at least 97% of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere is not manmade. Even with all the increases in fossil fuel emissions, the levels of this “greenhouse gas” have only gone up a tiny fraction of a percent since we began measuring it. God’s creation is precious, but it simply isn’t fragile enough to be toppled by our puny industrial achievements.

So, what is the cause of the increase in average temperatures (if we can even believe the claim that it is still going up)? We can look to the sky for the answer. It turns out that Jupiter and Mars, along with several moons, show signs of warming as well. Considering that all these celestial bodies share the same primary heat source as we do, doesn’t it seem at least a little more reasonable to say that the sun may be the driving factor behind warming? Of course, this squashes the big dreams of mankind reducing temperatures by driving hybrids, building windmills, etc.

Let’s take care of what God has given us, but let’s also recognize that doing so does not mean we must build a world alliance to enforce regulations and tax emissions on everything from coal-fired power plants to the putrid emissions of a cow who had too much grass to eat. Let’s not get carried away into thinking we’re sinning against God when neo-pagans preach falsely about rising sea levels or lonesome polar bears. Only Jesus had the power to create this planet of ours (John 1:1), and only he has the right or the ability to save or destroy it.

Was There Really a Noah’s Ark & Flood?

The account of Noah and the Ark is one of the most widely known events in the history of mankind. Unfortunately, like other Bible accounts, it is often taken as a mere fairy tale. The Bible, though, is the true history book of the universe, and in that light, the most-asked questions about the Ark and Flood of Noah can be answered with authority and confidence.
